Challenger Division

What is the Challenger division?

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5-16, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide. Click here for the 2025 Challenger Age Chart.

How are teams assembled?

Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as Tee Ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three.

What is a Challenger game like?

In a Challenger game, each player gets a chance at bat. The side is retired when the offense has batted through the roster, or when a pre-determined number of runs have been scored, or when three outs are recorded. A soft, Tee Ball-style baseball is used during games. Little League recommends that no score be kept during Challenger games.

Where does our Challenger team play games? When are games played?

Mukilteo Little League generally does not have enough Challenger players to form its own team, so it generally combines with other leagues in District One.

When are practices held?

Practice information will be available at a later date.

What other accommodations are made for Challenger players and families?

District One representatives work together for field times, rules of play, safety, equipment, and other issues that may come up. Practices and games are optional. The Challenger Division encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

Who can I contact for more information and how do I register?

For more information , contact [email protected].  Mukilteo Little League currently does not use its online registration system to register Challenger participants but will work with any family who wishes their child to participate in the District One program.

In addition, check out the Challenger brochure on the Little League International Website.

Come join the fun!
